Ashtanga Yoga Austin

About –
Ashtanga Yoga Austin was started out of one woman’s search for meaning and balance. Its founder, Priya Jhawar, first stepped into yoga in 2001 after years of training in classical Indian dance. Later, while working long hours as a corporate lawyer, yoga became her lifeline by helping her stay grounded and clear through the pressures of courtroom battles.
In 2009, she stepped away from law and turned fully toward her true calling that is sharing yoga. She traveled to Mysore, India, to study with her teacher and yoga legend Shri R. Sharath Jois, apprenticed with senior Ashtanga mentors for deepening her roots in the tradition.
In 2016, Priya opened the doors of Ashtanga Yoga Austin. It started with daily Mysore-style classes and soon welcomed the community with an open house space. The studio grew as a place where students could learn not just postures, but the discipline, focus, ability, curiosity, and spiritual depth that this practice offers!

Mysore Austin

About –
Mysore Austin was established in 2016 with a clear purpose to bring the traditional practice of Ashtanga yoga, as it’s taught in India, to the heart of Texas.
The shala was founded by Andrew Bresnen, who started his career as a research scientist but found a deeper calling and belief in yoga. In 2014, he traveled to Mysore, India, where he studied under Shri Sharath Jois, the head of the Ashtanga lineage.
Mysore Austin began with simple roots as a quiet space where students could open their mats each morning and learn the practice slowly. Instead of large group classes, Andrew focused on Mysore-style teaching, a one-on-one approach where each student is guided at their own pace.
The reason behind starting the shala was to share the practice that had transformed his own life by creating a community in Austin where yoga could be practiced in its most authentic and traditional form.

- Mysore-style Classes – This is the heart of their offering where students arrive anytime by moving through the Ashtanga sequence at their own pace and receive personalized guidance from the teachers.
