Introduction

Have you ever had the feeling of not having enough? If so, I’m sorry you feel that way. I know it’s difficult, but you are not the only one feeling this way. In one way or another, we all feel we are lacking in some way – not smart enough, skinny enough, or rich.

Many of us have this scarcity mindset, and it’s challenging to shake it off, even after we achieve our goals. We find that voice inside our head saying we are lacking is still there.

But my whole life changed when I shifted from a scarcity to an abundance mindset.

How did many people – myself included – do it?

By practicing Meditation for Abundance.

What are Abundance and Mindfulness?

Abundance

Dictionary.com defines abundance as:

  1. The state or condition of having a copious quantity of something; plentifulness.
  2. Plentifulness of the good things of life; prosperity.
  3. A tremendous amount of something.

As you can see, abundance has many different meanings. So, you can have abundance even when you don’t have enough money as long as you have plenty of good things in your life.

But why is it that most of us struggle to see this abundance?

Why do many of us think we are not good enough or don’t have enough?

It’s because many of us have a scarcity mindset.

Stephen Covey coined these terms in his best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

The scarcity mindset refers to the thinking that if one person takes one piece of the pie, that leaves less for everyone else. This mindset makes people believe there is always a deficit – that is not enough for everyone.

So, how do we shake off this scarcity consciousness?

Through practicing Mindfulness.

Mindfulness

According to Dictionary.com, Mindfulness is:

  1. The quality or state of being conscious or aware of something;
  2. A mental state is achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

Mindfulness is the ability to fully notice what’s right in front of us purposely, with acceptance, and without judgment. This is a basic human ability, yet we struggle with it. Because many of us are distracted from the present moment by traumas from the past or anxiety for the future, it leads to clouded thoughts and mental blind spots.

Eckhart Tolle says, “Acknowledging the good you already have in your life is the foundation of all abundance.”

Mindfulness is an excellent tool for noticing everything happening in our lives. If you have a scarcity mindset, Mindfulness will help you see and celebrate the positive things in your life.

How Mindfulness Helps You Shift from a Scarcity to an Abundance Mindset

Many studies have shown the benefits of Mindfulness. It can reduce stress, relieve chronic pain, improve memory, and change your mindset. But how does it change you from thinking you don’t have enough to believing you have more than enough?

Mindfulness Reduces Activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN)

Many of us are conditioned to feel like we are not enough or that resources are scarce. So even when our circumstances change and we have enough, we keep returning to our default scarcity mode. If you are like this, Mindfulness can help you.

Several studies at Yale University show that practicing Mindfulness reduces the activity in the part of the brain which controls our default mode. The Default Mode Network (DMN) is the part of the brain responsible for our “monkey mind” or mind-wandering. When this is your default mode, your mind will constantly wander instead of seeing the good things you already have. Operating on this mode leads to feelings of fear and unhappiness. According to the study, Mindfulness decreases the activity in the DMN. Of course, it may not happen instantly. But the more your practice Mindfulness, you will get your mind to snap out of the “monkey mind” mode.

Mindfulness Decreases Brain Cell Volume in the Amygdala

A study at Harvard in 2011 shows that Mindfulness changes the brain’s structure. It increases the cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which is responsible for learning and memory. When this happens, you will find it easier to remember the abundant experiences.

The study also shows that Mindfulness decreases brain cell volume in the amygdala, where anxiety, fear and stress happen. As a result, it helps lower the fear that you will not have enough or that there is not enough to go around.

Mindfulness Trains Your Mind to Be Attentive

Mindfulness improves your concentration and trains you to be more attentive. If you constantly compare your life with other people’s, you are most likely not fully living your own life. On the other hand, if you are attentive to your life, you will be able to see the abundance you already have. You have plenty of skills, talents and other things as well.

Mindfulness Reduces Anxiety

Anxiety is fear-based, just like scarcity thinking. When you think there is not enough, you feel scared for yourself. Mindfulness reduces your anxiety and helps clear your head. So, it makes it easier for you to see if resources are scarce or not.

Tips For Programming yourself for wealth

Neuroplasticity is real. It means you can change your mindset. If you want to change your mindset from scarcity to abundance, here’s how to do it:

Focus on what you have

The scarcity mentality prevents us from looking at our plates. For example, instead of looking at the money we have in our savings account, we keep seeing that our friends have bigger homes and fancier cars than we have. Therefore, they must have more money than us, and we feel inadequate. But we can’t know that unless we ask them how much they have. We are just assuming. So, instead of casting an envious eye at what other people have, focus on what you already have. It helps you realize how far you’ve come.

Be in the Right Company

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” If you have a scarcity mindset as your default mode, you can change it. Mindfulness can change your default mode, but we are also social creatures. It means people around us can influence us. So, spend more time with people who focus on wealth, abundance, and prosperity and think they already have it. Doing this will help you change your mindset.

Create a Pie for Everyone

A person with a scarcity mindset thinks that there is also one pie. When one person takes a piece from it, there will be less pie or no pie left for others. But the truth is, there are many pies out there. Everyone can win. So, create situations where everyone wins. Not everyone wants the same thing anyway. Hence, listen to other people and what they want or need. Then create opportunities for yourself that will not make yourself or other people feel like they are losing.

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude changes your brain, same with Mindfulness. Maintaining a gratitude journal, practicing gratitude meditation, or simply saying thank you at every opportunity increases your dopamine level. According to a study, gratitude activates multiple brain parts, including the hypothalamus and reward pathways. It also activates the brain stem that produces dopamine, the neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure.

Practicing gratitude or saying thank you frequently increases your pleasure and happiness. When you have positive thoughts, you will likely not think of what’s wrong or missing in your life. Instead, you will experience fulfillment and contentment.

Recognize Possibilities

Having an abundance mindset makes you see the possibilities in life. When you have a scarcity mindset, the opposite happens. You don’t think you are adequate or have enough, so you think nothing will happen to your life. If scarcity is your focus, you will not notice the possibilities and not seize them. Therefore, focus on abundance and you will develop an abundance mindset.

Meditating for Wealth and Prosperity

There is more than enough wealth and prosperity in the universe for all of us. If you have a scarcity mindset, change it by focusing on abundance. You can do this by meditating on wealth and prosperity. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Find the most comfortable resting position. You can sit on the ground or a chair; close your eyes. Rest your hands on your lap with your palms facing up or down.
  2. Start by noticing your breath. Observe the feeling of the breath in your body. Observe how the breath enters and exits through your nose. Then, after a while, start taking at least five slow, deep breaths.
  3. To help manifest wealth and prosperity, visualize having health and prosperity in your life. It doesn’t just have to be about money. But think how your life would be if you had more wealth. How would you feel when you have more abundance in your life? Do you feel light and joyful? Or maybe you feel more generous, so you share your wealth with those in need. Continue visualizing a life of abundance for a few minutes or as long as you like.
  4. Then finally, when you are ready, gently open your eyes and see if you can maintain the abundance mindset throughout your day.
