Dudhsagar Falls: One of the Wonders of Goa

When looking for a truly special place to visit in Goa, you can’t miss the opportunity to head to the Dudhasagar Falls. They are located in the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and the Mollem National Park.

This area is filled with rich flora and fauna, which will make it a dream to visit for people that enjoy being surrounded by nature. From the Bengal tiger to wild dogs, there’s a wide variety of animals that run free through this park.

Interestingly, these are the fifth tallest waterfalls in the entire country. The fall of water has an impressive height of 320 meters (1020 feet). Their privileged location, great height, and beautiful natural surroundings make the Dudhsagar Waterfalls an unforgettable destination.

Best Time to Visit

If you want to include the Dudhsagar Waterfalls in Goa within your visit to the region, it’s best for you to go during the monsoon season. This period is approximately from June to August.

We recommend this time of the year because it’s when you’ll get the best view of the waterfalls. Furthermore, you’ll feel the true power of nature as the huge amount of water pours down, causing a roar that you’ll feel in your bones.

In addition, the river will also have a lot more water, making for a much more beautiful spectacle. However, if you want to make sure you’re able to walk the irregular trail towards the Dudhsagar Waterfall more comfortably, you might want to consider other months.

To avoid a bad slip, it might be safer for you to explore this beautiful place between November and January. There’s still plenty of water to make for an impressive view, but the trail will be less slippery and, therefore, safer.

How to Reach Dudhsagar Falls

By car

dudhsagar falls how to reach

If you’re heading there on a car from Panjim, you should be able to make it to Kulem in about two hours. There’s a parking facility and you’ll have to pay a fixed price for the entire day. You’ll have to walk the rest of the way as no private cars are allowed inside the national park.

By train

You have different options regarding train rides and subsequent trekking routes.

  • Castle Rock:  First, to head to the waterfall in Goa, you’ll need to take a train to Lonja junction. There, you can board a second train to Castle Rock or you can grab either a bus or a taxi. Once you’re at Castle Rock station you can start your trek.

It should take you between four and six hours to make it to the Dudhsagar Falls. This is a great option to enjoy the beautiful view of the valleys.

  • Kulem: You can also choose to head to Kulem after you reach the Lonja junction. This trek takes about three hours. It’s not as scenic as the prior one as you’ll be walking alongside the railway. However, you’ll go past the Dudhsagar Devi Temple. This is after you’ve left the railway road in favor of the jeep road. After you pass the temple, you need to cross the river and go through the forest to make it to the Dudhsagar Falls.
  • Kuveshi: This option is only available when it’s not monsoon season. Perfect for people that love getting immersed in the outdoors. You can ride a cab from Castle Rock to the village of Kuveshi. From there, you can go through the forest and cross the Mandovi River. This road will lead you straight to the Dudhsagar Waterfalls.
  • Hire transportation: Once you’ve gotten to Kulem, you can hire a jeep. It needs to be one that’s properly registered with the Goa Forest Department. This is because, as we’ve stated before, no private vehicles are allowed into the Mollem National Park.

If this is a family visit, then it’s best to take this option as the trekking routes might be too tiring for small kids or elderly people. Keep in mind that you’ll still have a small, 1-kilometer trek from where the transport drops you to the falls.

Important Considerations

  • Before, people would get down at Dudhsagar station and trek from there to the Dudhsagar Falls. This is now completely prohibited.
  • Keep in mind that the ride on the Jeep can be very irregular. Therefore, you should be especially careful if you’re going with kids, as they might get a nasty bump.
  • Be prepared to spend most of your day on this exciting excursion. The time you spend coming and going from the Dudhsagar Falls varies, as it will depend on how many people are visiting.
  • Remember that you need to buy a ticket. You can now do it online to avoid the long waiting lines.
  • You can only be in the actual waterfall area for about one hour and a half, so make the most of it! Don’t forget your swimsuit or you’ll probably regret it.
  • Something else to consider is that, even though many people consider the water to be perfectly safe, there are certain rules. The most important one is that the use of a life jacket when bathing in the natural pool formed by the Dudhsagar Waterfalls is mandatory.
  • In addition, you should keep in mind that there are no food nor water vendors once you’re inside the park. The water of this waterfall in Goa is not drinkable. Therefore, you should bring your own water and food. By bringing your food you’ll also maximize the time you can be at the waterfalls.
  • Beware of the monkeys! At the entrance of the falls, you’ll find some naughty monkeys that might want to take away some of your belongings.

Dudhsagar Falls is an excursion that will provide you with a unique experience. If you love trekking, then you can go for one of the longer routes, and enjoy everything Goa’s beautiful landscapes have to offer. If not, you also have the option of getting there on a vehicle.

Either way, you’ll get to refresh yourself in the beautiful pool formed by the Dudhsagar Waterfall. You can’t pass on this destination once you’re in Goa. Start planning your trip and enjoy the adventure!
